EAT

Abbey Cottage has been perfectly designed for you to enjoy memorable gatherings and relaxed entertaining together. It’s bright and spacious dining area features a large dining table to comfortably seat all of your guests, and is perfect for relaxed and cosy dinners after a day of exploring the moors. A charming log burner adds warmth and atmosphere for intimate evenings during the colder seasons.

The immaculate kitchen blends modern design with traditional character and is fully equipped with all the modern conveniences you need for a short stay.  Outside, you and your guests can enjoy the large garden, complete with beautiful outdoor furniture and a modern BBQ. With the iconic Abbey right next door, it truly is the perfect setting for long summer lunches, evening drinks and peaceful dinners beneath the stars with spectacular Abbey views.

If you fancy venturing out to eat, then the nearby market town of Helmsley offers a wonderful selection of independent cafés, traditional pubs, restaurants and delis, where you can sample some of Yorkshire’s finest local produce and much-loved favourite treats. From homemade ice creams to full English breakfasts and some of the best Yorkshire roasts around, there is plenty to ensure you experience the best of Yorkshire when it comes to food and drink!

SLEEP

Abbey Cottage sleeps up to seven guests across four stylishly renovated bedrooms. Each room is individual in design and thoughtfully designed with bright, characterful interiors and luxurious finishing touches to ensure your stay is five star.

On the ground floor you will find a lovely light-filled ground floor double bedroom, ideal for older guests or those preferring step-free access. From the bedroom window, there are stunning views overlooking Rievaulx Abbey while a convenient downstairs loo sits nearby.

On the first floor, there are three further bedrooms. The spacious king bedroom features an atmospheric oak-beamed ceiling, spectacular abbey views, as well as a spacious ensuite bathroom with bath/shower. There is also a stylish double bedroom featuring a cosy armchair, exposed oak beams, and an ensuite shower room. And, finally, a charming single bedroom overlooks the front garden with its own ensuite shower room, offering a perfect retreat for someone wanting a little space alone.

RELAX

Relaxation comes so easily at Abbey Cottage thanks to it’s dreamy location and thoughtful interior design. At the heart of the cottage is the cosy living room where you can all get together to chill and unwind beside the log burner after a busy day of hiking or exploring. Abbey Cottage enjoys an extraordinary setting right beside the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, one of England’s most beautiful and historic monastic sites. Right from your doorstep, you can enjoy spectacular walks and hikes through the North York Moors countryside. There are a whole range of incredible scenic trails, woodland paths and cycling routes all nearby.

The picturesque market town of Helmsley is just a short drive away with its historic castle, popular pubs, charming tearooms and creative art galleries and showrooms. It makes a fantastic day out in any season and there is plenty for all ages to enjoy. The landscapes surrounding Helmsley are perfect for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. You’ll find endless opportunities to explore the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors National Park, from stepping barefoot through tiny streams to walking over heather-covered moorland and discovering panoramic hilltop views at Chimney Bank.

GROUND FLOOR

Guests enter the Abbey Cottage and on the ground floor there is a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, utility room, double bedroom with zip and link bed and cloakroom. (No shower or bath downstairs just a cloakroom) Please note the bedroom will be made up as a superking unless guests request a twin room.

FIRST FLOOR

Stairs lead up to the first floor with master bedroom with king bed and ensuite bathroom with shower over the bath.

OUTSIDE

Private parking and front and rear gardens. The rear garden has a patio area with outside garden furniture and bbq.

By Car

Reaching Rievaulx Abbey by car is one of the easiest and most scenic ways to arrive. The abbey is located just outside the market town of Helmsley, deep within the beautiful countryside of the North York Moors National Park.

From York, the journey takes around 45 minutes via the A19 and B1257, while from Leeds it’s approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. If travelling from London, allow around 4 to 4.5 hours by car. There is a visitor car park located close to the abbey entrance.

By Train

The nearest railway stations to Rievaulx Abbey are Thirsk and York. Most visitors travelling by train choose to arrive into York or Thirsk before continuing the journey by taxi or local bus.

From London King’s Cross, direct trains to York take around 2 hours, while Thirsk can be reached in approximately 2.5 hours. From either station, the onward journey to Rievaulx takes around 30–40 minutes by car or taxi.

By Plane

For those travelling from further afield, the closest airports are Leeds Bradford Airport, Newcastle International Airport and Manchester Airport.
