When my husband Chris was coming up to his 40th birthday, I knew I wanted to do something special for him. After all, 40 seems to be the new 50 these days! Its definitely become one of those milestone birthdays that’s well worth making a fuss over, especially when it gives you the perfect excuse to get all your favourite people together.
After spending far too many evenings researching 40th birthday ideas in Yorkshire, I realised I didn’t just want a party that lasted a few hours, I wanted to plan him a whole weekend with our favourite people where everyone could switch off, spend quality time together and actually enjoy celebrating without anyone worrying about taxis, designated drivers or racing off home to get back for the babysitter.
So, I booked The Hall in Pateley Bridge for a full weekend.
There were eight adults (four couples) and seven children aged between four and ten, which sounds slightly chaotic on paper, but it turned out to be absolute perfection!
We chose a weekend in January and, honestly, I couldn’t recommend it more. By the time Christmas is packed away and you’re wondering why January has approximately 487 days in it, having something exciting in the diary was exactly what everyone needed!!
Why I Chose The Hall in Pateley Bridge?
I’d considered lots of 40th birthday venues in Yorkshire, but nothing else quite compared to The Hall. As a venue, it has that rare ability to feel incredibly luxurious without ever feeling stuffy. It’s stylish, full of character and somehow manages to be both grand and cosy at the same time. Every room has its own personality and there are so many gorgeous little corners where you can sit with a coffee… or, in our case, a large glass of wine!
Space was a huge priority for me. I wanted somewhere we could all be together, but without feeling like we were living in each other’s pockets for three days.
The dining spaces were perfect for long breakfasts, takeaway feasts and our big celebration dinner, while the various lounges meant the adults could chat over a drink while the children disappeared off to play.
One thing that really sold it to me was the bedroom layout. Every couple had their own beautiful room with an en-suite bathroom, so everyone had their own little sanctuary at the end of the day. Trust me, with seven excited children running around, that became very much appreciated!
The location couldn’t have been better either. Pateley Bridge is such a lovely little town, with great pubs just a short stroll away, and Harrogate, York and Leeds are all within easy reach if you fancy exploring. It felt like a proper Yorkshire escape without being miles from civilisation.

40th Birthday Celebration Itinerary
Friday: Surprise Arrivals, Pizza and Plenty of Laughs
This was all a surprise for Chris, so I arrived a few hours before everyone else armed with food, decor and special touches for the big weekend.
I’d spent weeks collecting hundreds of photos from every stage of Chris’s life and dotted them all over the house. Baby photos, awkward school pictures, teenage hairstyles that should definitely stay in the past, university memories… every room had another little surprise waiting to be discovered. It became a bit of a running joke throughout the weekend, with everyone spotting photos they’d never seen before.
Before everyone arrived, I’d also allocated all the bedrooms and left little welcome bags for each family. The adults each had a miniature bottle of champagne and a wonderfully embarrassing photo of Chris, while the children had sweets waiting for them. It was such a simple thing to do but everyone absolutely loved it.
Guests arrived throughout the evening, with a couple travelling up from London, so Friday was deliberately low-key.
Nobody wanted to cook, so we ordered pizzas from Olleys in Pateley Bridge, poured a few glasses of red wine and settled in with board games while the children entertained themselves. It was relaxed, noisy, full of laughter and exactly how I wanted the weekend to begin.
Saturday: Fresh Air, Fabulous Food and Black Tie Fun
Saturday morning was blissfully slow. There was no schedule, no alarms and no pressure to be anywhere. Some people enjoyed a lie-in while the children were outside before most adults had even found the coffee machine! I laid out fresh croissants, fruit, cereal and plenty of coffee so everyone could help themselves whenever they emerged.
Eventually, we wrapped up warm and headed out for a long walk through the Yorkshire countryside. January often gets a bad reputation, but there was something really lovely about the crisp winter air, rosy cheeks and beautiful views. Halfway round we stopped at The Sportsman’s Arms for a well-earned drink before wandering back to The Hall.
That evening was the moment I’d secretly been most excited about.
I’d organised a black tie dinner in the private Hanley Room, and when I walked in, I honestly couldn’t stop smiling. The team at The Hall had decorated it beautifully, it looked so elegant and really made the evening feel like a proper celebration.
We hired a private chef who cooked a delicious French-inspired three-course meal, and with the service team included as part of the package, it meant that none of us had to lift a finger.
Meanwhile, the children were having the time of their lives in the main dining room with their own themed menu, party games and, later, an entertainer who kept them completely occupied in the lounge for two whole hours. As parents, I think we all agreed this might actually have been the best part of the weekend! We enjoyed an uninterrupted dinner, proper conversations and didn’t hear a single cry of “Muuuum!” all evening.
After dinner, The Hall’s house DJ took over, and before long the dance floor was full of children showing off questionable dance moves while the adults pretended they still had the knees they had in their twenties. It was one of those evenings where nobody looked at their phones, everyone laughed until their cheeks hurt and memories were made without anyone even trying.
Remarkably, we were all tucked up in bed by midnight which felt like quite an achievement!
Sunday: Bacon Sandwiches and Happy Goodbyes
Sunday mornings after a celebration should never be rushed, and this one certainly wasn’t. There were sleepy faces, plenty of coffee and another gentle stroll to blow away the cobwebs before Chris’s brother and his wife kindly cooked bacon sandwiches for everyone.
It was the perfect ending.
Nobody was desperate to leave, so we spent the last couple of hours chatting, packing up and replaying our favourite moments from the weekend before reluctantly heading home.
Would I Recommend The Hall for a 40th Birthday?
Without hesitation.
Hiring a private house gave us something that a restaurant or one-night party simply couldn’t. We weren’t just celebrating Chris turning 40, we were spending an entire weekend making memories with some of our favourite people.
The Hall struck the perfect balance between luxury and feeling completely at home. It gave the adults space to relax, the children endless places to play and everyone the chance to properly switch off for a few days.
