Herbert Cottage is a cosy, recently renovated, Grade II listed holiday cottage near York. Formerly part of the Westow Hall stable block, it offers all the modern comforts with added historic appeal. With easy access to local attractions and nearby pubs, it’s an ideal retreat for both exploration and relaxation.

The Blacksmith Arms Pub is just a short walk away, offering hearty British meals and a friendly atmosphere. Additionally, The Stone Trough Inn at Kirkham Abbey is only a two-minute drive, serving delicious food. The nearby town of Malton, just six miles away, is renowned for its food scene, boasting a variety of eateries, local markets, and delicacies. SLEEP

The spacious master bedroom features a king-sized bed, ample storage, a dressing table, and beautiful views of the front garden, with an en-suite bathroom. Bedroom 2 is a lovely twin room with its own ensuite shower room. Both rooms have homely countryside decor and modern furnishings. The cottage’s serene environment and quiet village setting ensure a restful night’s sleep.

RELAX

Relax in the peaceful ambiance of Herbert Cottage. The bright lounge features a fireplace, sofa, and armchairs, and is perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring Yorkshire. The dining area offers a warm, sociable space where you can enjoy meals together and play games. There is a large, beautifully maintained, garden at the front of the house which is perfect for al fresco dining or enjoying a good book in the summer months.

EXPLORE

The cottage has an enviable location, which is perfect to explore the beautiful Ryedale countryside. Westow Village is close to Kirkham Priory, and there are numerous nearby attractions, such as Castle Howard (3.8 miles), the Yorkshire Arboretum (4.1 miles), and Eden Camp (5.8 miles). Explore historic sites like Kirkham Abbey, or venture further to the coast, with Scarborough and Whitby just 27 miles away. The cottage is also within easy reach of popular destinations like Fountains Abbey, Flamingo Land, and the North York Moors. With great transport links, including Malton and York train stations, exploring the region is both convenient and enjoyable.

GROUND FLOOR

From the large Entrance Hall you enter the light and cosy Sitting Room with open fireplace surrounded by a club fender, sofa, armchairs, desk and smart tv.

The Dining Hall also leads off the Entrance Hall and has a circular dining table and chairs with the staircase leading up to the first floor.

Access to the beautiful large garden at the front of the house is through a large Oak door from the Dining Hall.

The Kitchen leads off the Dining Hall and has a Belling electric oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave with two warming drawers and kitchen table.

There is an arch leading to the Utility room with washing machine and side door leading out to the back of the cottage.

The Stairs in the Dining Hall lead up to a large hallway on the first floor leading to the Master Bedroom with king sized bed, cupboards, dressing table and stool and views over the front garden.

FIRST FLOOR

The Master Bedroom has a large Bathroom ensuite.

Bedroom 2 is a twin bedroom with ensuite Shower room, cupboards and dressing table.

By Train:

Westow is well connected by train, with Malton train station located just 6 miles away and York train station 15 miles away. Both stations offer direct services to other major cities in the UK. From these stations, you can easily access Westow by taxi or a local bus service.

By Car:

Westow is accessible via the A64, located in the Vale of York. The cottage is 15 miles from York, 6 miles from Malton, and easily accessible from the A1. The drive to Westow is scenic and straightforward, making it ideal for travelers driving from major cities like Leeds, Harrogate, or York.

By Plane:

The nearest major airports are Leeds Bradford Airport (40 miles away) and Manchester Airport (75 miles away). From the airport, you can take a train, hire a taxi, or rent a car to reach Westow. The A64 offers direct access to the village, providing a smooth route from the airport.

Location was perfect for exploring the area but there was so much more to see. The space was amazing, beautiful property and we felt right at home. Hoping to return!

An absolutely stunning cottage, in beautiful surroundings! The cottage itself is immaculate, in both design and cleanliness. It’s by far one of the best cottages that I have ever stayed in! Perfect host, providing all the necessary information that we needed to enjoy our stay. Westow and the surrounding areas were amazing (Kirkham Abbey was so beautiful!) We will most definitely be returning! Thank you for a wonderful stay at your beautiful cottage!! We didn’t want to leave!!

We were extremely happy with the cottage. It was spotlessly clean and fresh and had anything you could need. A nice spacious yet homely property. The garden was lovely and very peaceful. We have just returned from the property and had an excellent stay. The property was well prepped for our arrival and Elaine could not have been more helpful. The photos do not do the property justice. It is extremely well equipped with everything you could need to self cater to a high degree. We will be returning to this property.

Herbert Cottage was an absolutely delightful place to stay and we enjoyed our week there immensely . The cottage is huge! Especially the downstairs area and the main bathroom . The gardens are gorgeous . The building has been furnished very stylishly and it has everything you could possibly want . The kitchen is very well stocked and all the appliances were easy to work . The bedrooms were very large with superb storage and the beds were very comfortable . Everywhere was very clean. Elaine came over to introduce herself and showed us a few points to note / explained the recycling system etc . Communication was clear and efficient . The surrounding countryside is stunningly beautiful and there is plenty to explore. We would return in a heartbeat .

Herbert cottage was just wonderful. We took our gin and tonics and sat in the enormous front lawn and admired the aspect of the quaint house and tranquil surroundings. Dinner at the nearby Blacksmith’s Arms was fantastic. This rental can’t be beaten!

We have stayed at Herbert Cottage, before and was keen to return as it is fabulous! The cottage is decorated and furnished to an exceptional standard. Quality linens and towels plus quality kitchen equipment (love the mugs!) Everything you could possibly need was provided for. Elaine, the housekeeper, is an absolute gem. SO friendly and welcoming. The cottage was immaculately cleaned and smelled divine. Nothing was too much trouble. Its like meeting an old friend. The peace and tranquility suits us. Amazing sunsets to the gentle sound of the local cricket team. The local pub, The Blacksmith’s Arms, is very good. They also do takeaways if you prefer. So much to do in the area. Plan to return

A lovely property, in a beautiful location, which provided the perfect base central to all the places we wanted to visit locally. The quiet village and comfortable accommodation allowed us to relax and unwind after lots of sightseeing! We were met by Elaine for access and advice on local amenities, which was very helpful. I had a fantastic long weekend at Herbert Cottage with my elderly mother—easily one of the nicest places I’ve stayed in the UK. Attached to a grand manor house, the cottage feels more like a spacious country home than a traditional cottage. There’s plenty of room throughout, and the bathroom is so large you could fit a double bed in it! The interior is beautifully decorated with a tasteful, period charm. If you enjoy country living in a heritage property, you’ll fall in love with Herbert Cottage—just like I did. Elaine, the housekeeper, was fantastic: warm, helpful, and very knowledgeable. Westow is a quiet, peaceful hamlet perfectly located for exploring the area. A highlight was The Blacksmiths gastro pub nearby—don’t miss it, but be sure to book ahead! We’re already talking about returning!

Lovely cottage in a peaceful village location. We stayed for a week with our toddler. There are lots of local walks and places to see and a great base for exploring the rest of Yorkshire. Elaine who met us at the door was lovely and always very responsive.

The furniture was comfortable and the decor in keeping with the age and history of the property. We felt “at home” which is always a welcome bonus with a holiday home. Chose Herbert Cottage for its village location, sumptuous designer’s eye for matching furnishings and furniture. Very spacious interior and well stocked kitchen, with large garden to the back. We had a personable welcome and shown around the interior rooms by the Housekeeper with an introduction to its history. The surrounding countryside is familiar to us over the past 10yrs, but first time staying in Westow village was a pleasure- horses being exercised, deer on the early morning runs from the front door, with local tracks and quiet lanes for cycling. Buildings of local stone add to its village appeal. Saturday am Parkrun at Dalby Forest, walking from Scarborough around the renovated cliff top gardens with funicular cliff lift and Sunday lunch at White Lodge Hotel in Filey made for a fabulous week.

Absolutely fantastic property. Beautifully decorated with high quality pieces. Very comfortable beds. The building and location are truly stunning. Plenty of space for 4 adults. We cannot wait to visit again!

This was our second stay, of many I hope! There is nothing to fault, it’s perfect. Elaine is a wonderful person who goes over and above, her hard work makes for a super stay in a home that is spotless, well-equipped, luxurious and welcoming .

Clear and concise communications in advance and on arrival. Herbert Cottage as a property looked great in the pictures but was actually better in real life. Lovely open fire all pre loaded. Fully stocked house in every way including the kitchen. Very comfortable, exactly what you you need on a break, felt like you were being wrapped in a duvet. Lastly all details were accurate and emails and details were very prompt including when we sadly had to advise one of our party could not make it.

We’ve had a fantastic stay at Herbert Cottage. The cottage was spotlessly clean, furnished and equipped to a high standard and we really did have a very comfortable stay. Elaine really looked after us and gave us a very warm welcome. The village of Westow was perfect for what we needed and lots to do round and about. Would thoroughly recommend for an escape to the country.

We had a really wonderful stay here. The cottage is enormous for just two bedrooms and so tastefully done. Extremely clean and comfortable, with a lovely welcome from Elaine. I actually can’t fault it, which is very rare for me!!!
