Waterfalls

Aysgarth Falls

Aysgarth Falls stretch out over a mile on the River Ure. One of the most popular natural attractions in the Yorkshire Dales, the three stepped waterfalls at Aysgarth have been a tourist attraction for over 200 years. Wordsworth visited them and Turner sketched them. More recently they provided a dramatic setting for a scene from the Hollywood movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. The falls have plenty of good paths in the vicinity for walking in the woods and has a nearby visitor centre. The nearby Mill Race Teashop is one of our favourites!

Cauldron Falls

It’s no wonder JMW Turner stopped by to sketch Cauldron Falls during his travels around Yorkshire. The falls are located on the edge of the pretty Wensleydale village of West Burton, next to Waldon Beck.

Cautley Spout

Cautley Spout is said to be Britain’s highest over ground cascade, falling around 200 metres from a plateau called The Calf. The fall is located in the Howgill Fells, one of those quirks of the boundary system which means its in Cumbria but part of the Yorkshire Dales.

Hardraw Force

Hardraw Force lies less than a mile away from Hawes and at 100ft it is said to be the longest single drop waterfall in England. Getting to Hardraw Force is unusual to say the least; as it is located within the grounds of the historic Green Dragon Inn it is only accessible via the pub.

Janet’s Foss

This small waterfall close to the village of Malham does look like it belongs in a scene from a fairy tale. According to legend it’s named after Janet, the Queen of the Fairies, who was said to live in a cave behind the fall
